What is Dating?

Nowadays, the word dating and its connotations are extremely ambiguous, and at best, is used to loosely define an open relationship, or togetherness, with no relationship. Dating goes on for a period where both persons enjoy each other’s company but are not sure about the future, or the feelings they have for each other. Seeing someone, hanging out and phrases like this carry the same meaning.

Difference between dating and dating someone.

• Dating

Dating is more of a generic social term, where one goes out and meets people and spends time with them. Dating someone, is, however, a lot more specific, and connotes romantic time spend together with another person. It means you are seeing someone with a specific purpose, have time to yourselves only, and in regular intervals, with the hope of culminating it into a more defined relationship, if both persons feel the same way.

What is Dating

• What is a Date?

In short, a date is a no string attached, sexual relationship. There are terms like a friend with benefits, casual dating, and hooking up, which are all pretty close to the word date, but not quite. Though there are no strings attached, yet a date has a romantic connotation, and promise to explore the relationship. And this is a typical western culture, prevailing in North America and Europe, though some eastern countries are also warming up to it.

There is also a kind of social pressure in the prevailing dating countries to have sex with more partners, to have sex without involving emotions, and so-called ‘cool’ one night stands. So dating is kind of an open relationship where the two partners explore each other sexually and emotionally to find if they are a good fit. If everything falls okay, then they go-ahead to a deeper, dedicated relationship, else they part ways, without any hard feelings.

In the twenties, people are carefree, exploring mode, and age is not of concern. Finding love adds on greatly to this exploring the new life. Mistakes are also far higher in this age, owing to inexperience and immaturity, but people also can move on if they commit mistakes, without much of an emotional scar.

In the thirties, for singles, finding love becomes difficult, as people get busy in careers, work, and more in professional circles than of friends. Most people get married and start a family, so the goal shifts to family upbringing. Most have lost and gained love, and life takes s new meaning.

In the forties, however, life takes a different turn. People are wiser, more settled, have some economic security, have more time, but lesser social, informal groups, the regret of the biological clock not in their favor, and the regret that quite a few beautiful things in life are yet to be explored. This greatly affects the dating behavior.

Culture & Religion

• Culture

As mentioned before, culture plays a good part, though cultures are slowly getting diluted in a western manner these days. It is normal for a European to date several persons, have casual sex before they settle for a committed relationship. In Middle East countries, dating is non-existent, and marriage is the only way. In countries like India, it is a mixed scenario, with the part of the modern, educated youth vouching for the western culture, while a larger part despising the idea of staying together without marriage. Thus if culturally different people decide to date together, they must share their beliefs and expectations before they go on a long term date, to stay clear of surprises.

• Religion

Religious beliefs are deeply ingrained inside a person, and so we see several Christians marrying quickly together, to do right the consummate they had before marriage, or to be morally correct to share the bed with the person they love. Similar cultures exist in Hinduism and in countries like India, and the modern youth is always at a dilemma when it comes to serious dating.

What is Dating

Phase 1

Knowing each other

This is a zero commitment phase, and partners are free to date other people as well. Physical contact is generally shade limited, but people also experience the surge of desire to have greater physical contact.

Phase 2

Friends with benefits

During this phase, the significant physical contact changes to each other. People are still free to date other people, but the preferred one becomes the person, who is also showered with maximum physical relationships than others.

Phase 3

Monogamous dating

Foundation of a solid relationship is established, partners are introduced to respective families, and having sex with someone outside becomes a strict no. The stage is all set to be lost in deep romanticism, to float in dreams, and the desire to spend as much time together as possible. Partners began to appear in all parties of each other, and they are begun to be identified as one.

Phase 4

Pre-Marital

Expectations, goals, and targets are discussed, intimacy deepens. The idea of raising a family begins, and both partners are fully sure of the coupling.

Phase 5

Marriage

Completion of the commitment of being together, couples turning to raise a family, and entrance to a new life together.

Importance of Dating

Dating is important for a relationship because it allows you to get to know the person you are in a relationship with. Dating helps to reveal any problems you may have if pursuing a more serious relationship with a person, and it sets the foundation for marriage

Learning About Your Date

Whether you go out for coffee or to dinner, the experience of date lets you get familiar with the object of your affections by witnessing their actions and reactions to you in a public setting.

While learning about your significant other through dating, you will identify most of the behaviors and personality qualities that matter most to you.

Etiquette for Dating

It is also important to keep dating etiquette in mind when building a powerful relationship. First, be polite and considerate of your date.

Second, you should spend dates doing things which you both will enjoy, and hopefully be able to understand about one another in the process.

Third, during a conversation with each other, encourage your date to share details about their life, and ask friendly questions. Do not take date time as an opportunity to focus only on yourself, but also be careful not to make your date uncomfortable or to feel like they are being interrogated.

Dating and a Healthy Relationship

Take your own time to get to know one another while dating is an important aspect of forming a healthy relationship. You may want to become closer to the person you are dating, may want to spend all your time with that special person or you may want to have sex with that person.

Red Flags

A person might be a bad dating choice if the person pushes to see you all of the time, uses drugs or alcohol, doesn’t respect your need for time alone.

Misconceptions

Dating means different things to different people. Be sure that you and your partner agree to the same level of dating commitment before becoming too much involved.

Tips to Know Before Dating

Tips to know before dating

How They Feel About Their Ex

We can’t stress how important it is that you understand the relationship someone has with their ex before you start dating. Are they completely over each other and don’t talk at all? Are there lingering feelings still there? Or are they really close friends, but know they’re better off that way? Being aware of this situation will help you better determine if they’re worth pursuing. As to why date someone who’s still not over another person? Exactly, you wouldn’t want that. And we sure as heck don’t want that for you either.

Their Relationship With Their Family and Friends

Are they close to their family? Do they treat their parents well with respect, even if they don’t get along? Do they have quite a lot of friends, a tight-knit group, or none at all? It’ll take a lot of digging to figure this out, but knowing their relationship with the closest people in their life will give you a glimpse into how they’ll treat you. So if they have no friends and don’t ever want to be associated with their family, it means that there might be trouble and we’d advise you steer clear. Unless you really want to go for it, because who are we to judge?

What Their Schedule Is Like

Some people have packed schedules and others are pretty free. Being aware of their schedule beforehand will let you know how much time they actually have to spend with you. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t pursue someone if they have a lot on their plate. It’s just nice to understand why they’re a slow texter or can’t always hang out—it’s not that they don’t want to, it’s just that their day-to-day activities take up a lot of their free time. Now, if you’re looking for someone to spend all your hours of the day with, don’t go chasing someone who barely has time to breathe.

Their Long-Term Goals

Where exactly they see themselves in 10, 20, even 30 years? And are they in line with your life goals? If they’re not, are you willing to compromise some of the things you hope to achieve to help them get to the top? Would they be willing to do the same for you? You may not think this is all that important to know, but could you really be with someone who would have you pick their goals over your own and force you to fit into their mold? We don’t know about you, but we surely wouldn’t.

How They Feel About the Things You Enjoy.

We’re not saying you have to have everything in common with the person you’re dating. We prefer to like a few different things than the person we’re seeing, mainly so that they can introduce us to new things and vice versa. What matters most is how he or she feels about the things you enjoy. You’ll want to find someone who appreciates the things you like, even if they don’t necessarily enjoy them themselves.

What They Do in Their Free Time

Knowing what someone does in their free time will help you evaluate if they’d be willing to spend that time with you. If they spend the majority of their free time hanging out with their besties or catching up on their sleep, chances are they’ll be open to hanging out with you. But if they only play video games, watch movies or hide out in their room in their spare time, they may not be willing to give that up. You can see if they’d be open to doing those things with you, but if not, you might be out of luck.

How They Treat Others

Other than knowing how your future S.O. treats their ex, family, and closest friends, knowing how they interact with others is also super important. Because why would you be with someone who treats strangers disrespectfully? Exactly. Watch their interactions to see if they treat people as kindly as they should. If you’re willing to attempt to change their ways, then go for it. We’d advise against it, simply because change is difficult and not something most people are capable of doing.

What They’re Currently Looking for in a Relationship

Just because you’re ready for a long-term commitment, doesn’t mean the other person is. And you most definitely want to be on the same page before you enter into anything. It’ll cause all sorts of confusion later on down the road when you think you’re dating and they believe you’re just hanging out. Know the difference beforehand.

Their Communication Style

Communication is a huge part of any relationship, so it’s best you know how your partner expresses what they’re trying to say. Are they a bit more passive than you? Or are they all sorts of aggressive, which is something you can’t handle? Again, this all stems from you taking note of how they interact with others. See how they talk to their friends, family and even acquaintances to get the full picture.
